Home

I just realized that I didn’t post anything about us making it home, so we’re home!

Cam was tired, but was able to down a milkshake for lunch. He tried to lay down and sleep in the car, but that’s didn’t seem to work, so he crashed for a few hours after we got home around 3PM or so. But he got up after that and had dinner and just went to bed.

His stitches are starting to bug him and he can’t wash his hair until Sunday, so he’s pretty peeved about that, but Mandy’s shower cap is very fetching on him.

At this point, we wait for about 4-6 week to see how his brain recovers. Then we can really start watching for a lack of seizures. He’ll still be taking his medications, and if he has a long enough period of seizure freedom, we can wean him off of them and see if that works.

Discharging!

We got all of our orders and now are just waking up a tired Cameron to encourage him to leave. We still have to pull his leads and his IV but as soon as we can wake him and get him dressed, we can be on our way.

Morning Update

Cam had a rough night sleeping. Not because of anything medical wrong with him, just because of the constant checking on him.

The nurse came in around 11PM to ask a question to test his cognitive ability and Cam nearly screamed at her because he was so tired. I think they stopped that bit afterward. But they still had to check on leads moving, taking his temp, drawing labs, etc.

Good news is that everything still seems good this morning. Labs are normal for what he should have post-surgery and otherwise he seems fine. But I suspect he will be grumpy and napping a lot today.

Bedtime Update

Cameron had a good evening. Full meal and some pudding for dessert. Played a little of his Switch, although he didn’t quite have the energy he usually has for it. Around 8:15, he decided it was bedtime, so the nurser helped us get unhooked from all his leads and he was able to walk into his bathroom very steadily and was able to pass urine with no problem, both very positive steps. He took his evening meds and got back into bed and passed out.

Overall, very good signs. Tolerating everything and no pain; about as good as you could expect. From what I can tell, he has a little weakness on his left hand side, mainly in his hand, which isn’t uncommon given the trauma to his right side of his brain. He had that last time as well so it’s no surprising.

Sounds like the nurse will check in every two hours since he technically is in the ICU. She’ll draw labs around 4AM, but hopefully she can just use the IV and not have to draw any blood the old-fashioned way.

Today went as well as we could have hoped for. Whether though His hand or through the staff here at PCH, we could feel God being with Cam throughout this process. The prayers and well wishes from family and friends was felt with us all day as well. Here is hoping for a smooth morning and a early discharge.

Update

Cam has had some visitors, various doctors checking in on him. He’s finally awake for the most part, despite being tired, and has finished some meds and some chocolate milk, which is a good sign. We’ve ordered him some dinner and we’ll see how he handles that.

All in all, I’d say he’s coming out of things well and showing positive signs. We’re still on track for leaving tomorrow at this pace.

ICU

Cam is waking up slowly and seems fine.

I don’t post this to make fun of Cam, but there is a meme like this that fits with his state right now.

Out of surgery

Sounds like the procedure was a success in the sense that they were able to accomplish what they wanted to do in the three laser burns and he no bleeding.

We will head up to ICU after taking a lunch break. He should be able to be seen with an hour.

Procedure Complete?

The status board here in the waiting room says Cam’s procedure is finished. That means we should be hearing from the surgeon soon. Not sure how that will take. I know they still had to confirm things in the MRI, but maybe they got that already.

It seemed to go a bit faster than original estimates, so we hope that is a good sign.

In MRI now

Cam’s nurse just called to tell me they are headed to MRI now, to confirm placement of the lasers. Once that is done, they’ll start the actual meat of the procedure. It will take several hours to do the ablation across all three areas as they want to go slow and not damage anything they don’t want to hurt but make sure they get everything they want.

Surgery Underway

The head nurse just called me and told me they are starting the surgery now. They had to do MRI work first to plot the path to the three targets first and now the procedure will get underway.
